Our curriculum is based on the Massachusetts Department of Education Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences, which were developed to ensure a strong foundation for learning.  The philosophy behind our theme-based curriculum is that young children learn best by doing.  Learning requires active thinking and experimenting to find out how things work, to learn firsthand about the world we live in.

Pre-School Program

Pre-School 3- to 4-year-olds
Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings, 8:45 - 11:45 am
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday afternoons, 12:30 - 3:30 pm
Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 8:45 - 11:45 am

The curriculum for our 3-year-old program focuses on creating an environment that supports a child’s growth and development by providing “play” experiences which encourage exploration, discovery and learning.  Providing a wide variety of materials and resources which support rich and involved play experiences promotes learning in many ways.

Through dramatic play a child learns to use props to move from one idea to another and to express feelings through words and actions.  Block play encourages a child to judge distance, space and physical relationship while developing hand-eye coordination and small manipulative skills.  In the Language Arts center, a child begins to recognize that written words on a page represent spoken words and ideas.  Open-ended activities with art materials help a child appreciate differences in texture, shape and size and to enjoy art for art’s sake.

As the children enjoy their play, they are encouraged to problem solve, focus and work for extended periods while learning how to work cooperatively with others and resolve conflicts.

Why Pre-K at HNS?

We offer full day kindergarten and kindergarten enrichment at our school.  We know what a child needs to succeed in kindergarten.  The Pre-K teachers collaborate with the kindergarten teachers to enhance the learning experience of each child, and prepare the child for the next step on his or her educational journey: the world of kindergarten.

Our Early Childhood teachers design the curriculum with intent, based on their knowledge of children and how they learn.  They observe, reflect and record children in the classroom to encourage participation and provide the best learning for each child.

Today, with the emphasis on standardized testing, the importance of content areas has increased.  We teach content while respecting the developmental stages of each child.  Below you will find the content areas covered in each program:

HNS Kindergarten Goals

Specific goals of the program are to provide children tools with which they can achieve age-appropriate academic competencies, acquire the focus and discipline necessary for task completion, and instill accountability and responsibility for their own learning. In addition, children learn respect for themselves and others, social skills, independent thinking, communication skills, and gain confidence in learning by increasing their self-esteem.

Kindergarten Enrichment
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 12:30-3:15 (Bring Lunch)

The goal of our Kindergarten Enrichment Program is to supplement and enrich the half-day kindergarten program offered by the public schools. The theme-based curriculum will include literacy, science, math, cooking, music, arts/crafts, outdoor play and more. Hands-on learning experiences will support the children’s kindergarten curriculum. We provide a warm, safe environment where each child feels comfortable and confident throughout the learning process.

Sessions will be 2-1/2 hours long, meeting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:45 to 3:15. Parents will be responsible for transportation; however, carpools between kindergarten and our program can be facilitated. The class will have 2 fully-qualified teachers and a maximum of 16 students. The program will begin in September and end in the first week of June.

Full Day Kindergarten
Monday - Thursday, 8:20 - 2:20 pm, Friday 8:20 - Noon

The small class size and low student-teacher ratio contributes to a learning environment where children are not rushed but rather have the opportunity to explore a topic in its entirety.  The HNS Kindergarten curriculum follows the same reading and math programs that are used in the Hingham public schools (MacMillan/McGraw-Hill reading program and Everyday Math).  The decision to use these programs was made to provide consistency and to ease the children’s transition from kindergarten at HNS to first grade in the public schools.  In addition to the traditional components of kindergarten, the longer day allows more time for social studies, science, outdoor play, exploration, creative arts and music.  We have our specialists each week in Spanish, music, art and gym.

A typical day (8:30-2:20pm) involves:

Signing in
Greeting peers
Literacy
Center time
Recess
Fine motor/art project
Specialty (Spanish, Gym or Music)
Lunch
Read aloud/quiet time
Math and quiet center
Recess
Dismissal

Note: Transportation is provided to and from HNS, with the exception of pick-up at school on Fridays.
